E.D.C. Mineral & Gem Society - Lapidary Class Rules

  1. This Class is open to club members.
  2. Guest(s) will be allowed to attend classes as an observer and may work on machines with permission of instructor and Board of Directors.
  3. Proper instruction on machine use is mandatory for all participants.
  4. No one under 18 will be registered unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  5. Please sign in and pay the class fee at each meeting.
  6. Each person will be allowed a portion of the class time to work at the equipment.
  7. Work on one project at a time.
  8. Use of trim saw is limited to cutting two cabs unless no one else is using the saws.
  9. Each person is responsible for clean up. One-half hour (or less) will be set aside at the end of the period for clean up.

You will need to bring with you:

    • apron to protect clothing
    • safety glasses (some glasses are available in club cabinet)
    • magnifier
    • note book
    • clean cloth to dry stones

MACHINERY CARE:

The society is responsible for replacement of any used-up or damaged equipment.

  • Each person will be aware of instructions attached to the equipment.
  • If you are the last person to use the saws or grinders be sure to turn off water and let machine run until water is drained from hose.
  • Be aware that a LIGHT pressure against the grindstones, sanders and polisher is more effective than a hard pressure. Let the grit do the work.
  • Move stone across the grinding wheel as you work to avoid wearing a groove in the grinding or sanding surface.
  • Do not use grinding wheels or sanders for soft material. Clean any material buildup from your stones before moving on to the next stage.

TRIM SAW USE

  • Wear face shield or glasses when sawing.
  • Make sure that there is coolant in saw before use.
  • The trim saws should only be used to trim slab material no greater than ¼ inch thick
  • Do not jam or force stone against saw blade. It will cut by itself.
  • Do not try to cut curves, saw only straight lines.
  • Do not let stone slip. Apply firm steady slow pressure with fingers using both hands.
  • Clean up stone fragments after each use.

GRINDER USE:

  • Wear eye protection.
  • DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF MACHINE WHEN STARTING.
  • Be sure wheels are getting plenty of water. If wheels look white, they need more water.
  • Empty drain buckets when they are about one-half full. Check level of water before leaving wheel.
  • Turn off water when through using wheel and let wheels spin-dry before turning machine off, approximately 2 minutes.

SANDING BELTS:

  • WASH YOUR STONE AND HANDS BEFORE MOVING UP TO THE SANDING STEP.

The reason for the careful washing is to avoid contaminating the belts with a coarser grit, causing your companions to curse and carry-on when their carefully ground stone develops large scratches.

  • Have plenty of water on sanding belts. Empty drain buckets when they are about one-half full. Check level of water before leaving wheel.
  • Start sanding on coarse (200) belt and go to the next grit finer when the previous grit marks are removed. Wash your hands and stone.
  • Continue to sand and WASH on the successive finer grit belts until you have achieved a good finish and shape on the cabochon.
  • Do not put heavy pressure on stone against sanding belt. Move stone across belt as you polish.
  • Do not press sharp points or edges against belts.
  • Do not overheat stones. Touch stone against wrist frequently to test for heat.

NOW YOU'RE READY TO POLISH YOUR WORK OF ART

POLISHING WHEELS:

  • On right side leather disc, spray water from squirt bottle on about a 3-inch center of disc, paint small amount of TIN OXIDE on wet spot. Stroke stone across and against the disc. Hold your work firmly under control.
  • On left hand felt disc, work CERIUM OXIDE into felt and stroke against disc counter clockwise.
  • Do not mix polish agents on discs.
  • Washing hands and stone before polishing stone.
  • Do not overheat stones. Touch stone against wrist frequently to test for heat. If stone gets hot, do not put it in water. Let it cool gradually. Many good stones will fracture or melt the dop wax and disappear across the room.
  • Always remember that you are creating a piece of jewelry. Treat your work with respect and pride.

IF ANY EQUIPMENT FEELS OR SOUNDS STRANGE, SHUT IT DOWN AND SEEK ADVICE FROM THE SUPERVISOR OF THE CLAS
